Pick n Place Machine Surface Mounting Head

RobotDigg provides several configurations for Pick and Place (PnP) head units, specifically designed for DIY and small-scale industrial machines (often used with OpenPnP).
These units are categorized by the number of nozzles they support, which directly impacts the machine's efficiency—more nozzles allow the head to pick multiple components from feeders before returning to the PCB for placement.

1. Single PNP Head Unit
The single head is the entry-level configuration. It is designed for simplicity and precision rather than high-speed throughput.
Z-Axis Movement: Uses one NEMA 17 stepper motor to drive the vertical (Z) movement, typically along a linear rail (like the MGN9).
Rotation (C-Axis): Features one NEMA 8 or NEMA 11 hollow shaft stepper motor. The component is held by vacuum suction through the hollow shaft, and this motor rotates the part to the correct orientation before placement.
Best for: Beginners, low-volume prototyping, or machines where space is extremely limited.

2. Dual PNP Head Unit
This is one of RobotDigg's most popular units because it balances cost and speed. It uses a clever "lever" mechanism to maximize the utility of a single Z-motor.
Z-Axis Control: It uses one NEMA 17 stepper motor to control two separate nozzle assemblies.
Lever Mechanism: Instead of two separate Z-motors, a rocker or lever is used. When the NEMA 17 moves, it tilts or engages a lever that can push down one nozzle at a time. This reduces the weight of the head and the number of motor drivers needed.
Rotation: It includes two NEMA 8 or NEMA 11 hollow shaft motors, one for each nozzle, allowing independent rotation of two different components.
Components: Typically includes 2x linear rails (e.g., HIWIN MGN9), aluminum mounting plates, and brass adapters for Juki nozzles.

3. Triple PNP Head Unit
The triple head unit is designed for higher efficiency, often used in machines where the travel time between feeders and the PCB is a bottleneck.
Z-Axis Control: Unlike the dual head's lever system, the triple head usually adopts a 1-to-1 ratio, where three NEMA 17 stepper motors (or occasionally NEMA 14s to save weight) independently control the vertical movement of each nozzle.
Rotation: Features three hollow shaft motors (NEMA 8 or 11).
Advantage: Independent Z-control allows for more complex "gang" picking (picking multiple parts of different heights simultaneously) and faster operation, as there is no mechanical delay from a lever mechanism.
